Topic: The Ladybug

Objectives & Outcomes

  • Students will learn interesting facts about ladybugs, including why they are called ladybugs and what they eat.

Materials

  • Pictures of ladybugs
  • Information cards with facts about ladybugs

  • Bag of pretzels to represent ladybug food

Warm-up

  • Ask students if they have ever seen a ladybug before.
  • Ask students what they know about ladybugs.
  • Write their answers on the board and discuss as a class.

Direct Instruction

  • Show students a picture of a ladybug and discuss its features as a class.
  • Explain that ladybugs are red and have spots on their bodies.
  • Tell students that ladybugs are important because they help to keep garden pests like aphids under control.
  • Ask students if they know any other interesting facts about ladybugs.

Guided Practice:

  • Divide students into pairs and give each pair a set of ladybug pictures to cut out.
  • Ask students to glue the ladybug pictures on a piece of construction paper in a row.
  • Encourage students to use lots of glue so that the ladybugs will hold firmly to the construction paper.
  • After the glue has dried, ask students to write a short description of each ladybug on a separate piece of paper.

Independent Practice:

  • Give each student a sheet of construction paper and a pencil.
  • Ask students to cut out as many ladybug shapes as they can from the sheet of construction paper and glue them on the paper to form a collage.
  • Encourage students to be creative and to use lots of glue so that the ladybugs will hold firmly to the construction paper.
  • After the glue has dried, have students write a short description of each ladybug on a separate piece of paper and hang their collages on the wall.

Closure:

  • Ask students to share their collages with the class and explain what they have written on their separate pieces of paper.
  • Ask students to share their favorite parts about ladybugs and why.
  • Thank the students for their participation and remind them to come to class ready to learn.

  • Observe students during the independent practice activity and take note of their understanding of the story and their ability to write and draw about their favorite part of the ladybug.
