Topic: Ships, sailors, Lighthouses

Objectives & Outcomes

• Students will be able to describe what a ship is and what a sailor does.
• Students will be able to name different types of lighthouses and describe their functions.

Materials

• Pictures of ships, sailors, and lighthouses
• Detail cards with information about each type of vessel
• Construction paper and markers for the culminating activity

Warm-Up

• Ask the students if they have ever been on a boat or ship before. What did they do on the boat?
• Ask the students if they know what a sailor does and what the job is like.
• Show the students the pictures of ships, sailors, and lighthouses and have them raise their hands if they have seen these things before.

Direct Instruction

• Tell the students that today they will be learning about ships, sailors, and lighthouses.
• Explain that ships are large vessels that travel across the ocean and carry cargo and passengers.
• Tell the students that sailors are the people who work on the ships and help to sail the ships.
• Show the students pictures of ships and sailors and ask them to describe what they see.
• Explain that lighthouses are buildings that are located on the coast and are used to warn ships about danger and to guide them to safe harbor.
• Tell the students that we will be reading a short story about a ship, sailors, and a lighthouse.

Guided Practice

• Have the students work in pairs and give each pair a set of pictures of ships, sailors, and lighthouses.
• Have the pairs work together to match the pictures to the definitions and descriptions provided.
• Have the students share their answers with the class and discuss any questions or challenges they had.

Independent Practice

• Have the students work in small groups to create a short presentation on one type of ship, sailor, or lighthouse.
• Have the groups present their projects to the class.

Closure

• Ask the students to share one thing they learned about ships, sailors, and lighthouses.

Assessment

• Observe the students during the independent practice to assess their understanding of the topic.
• Collect and review the students' lighthouses to assess their ability to apply their knowledge about lighthouses in a creative way.
