Topic: Levels of the Ocean

Objectives & Outcomes

  • Students will be able to identify the different levels of the ocean and the creatures that live in each.

Materials

  • Picture of the ocean
  • Marker
  • Cardstock or construction paper
  • Scissors

Warm-up

  • Ask students if they have ever been to the ocean or a lake.
  • Ask them if they have ever seen fish in the water.
  • Ask them if they know what the different levels of the ocean are and what creatures live in each.

Direct Instruction

  • Show the students a picture of the ocean and point out the different levels: the shoreline, the surf zone, the neritic zone, the photic zone, and the abyssal zone.
  • Explain that creatures in the different levels have different characteristics and habits.
  • For example, creatures in the shoreline may be able to come and go as they please, but creatures in the abyssal zone may not be able to come up to the surface at all.
  • Ask students if they have any questions about the different levels of the ocean.

Guided Practice

  • Divide the class into small groups and give each group a set of pictures of different ocean creatures.
  • Have the students identify the level each creature is from and explain why.
  • Encourage students to share their answers with the class and ask questions if they have any.

Independent Practice

  • Give each student a piece of paper and pen and have them draw a picture of the ocean with at least three different levels.
  • Have them label the different levels and include at least one creature in each level.
  • Encourage students to show their work to the class and explain their drawings.

Closure

  • Ask students to share their drawings with the class and explain their choices for the different levels and creatures.
  • Discuss the importance of each level and the creatures that live there.
  • Ask students to share their favorite level and creature and explain why.

Assessment

  • Observe students during the sorting activity and discussions to assess understanding of the different levels and creatures.
  • Collect and review students' drawings as a form of assessment.
