Topic: Animal Classification

Objectives & Outcomes

• Students will be able to classify animals based on their characteristics and behaviors.

Materials

• Pictures of various animals (e.g. cat, dog, horse, fish, bird, pig, rabbit, etc.)
• Chart paper and markers

Warm-up

• Ask students to name some animals they know.
• Write their responses on the chart paper, dividing them into different categories (e.g. mammals, reptiles, birds, etc.).
• Ask students to explain why they put each animal in its respective category.

Direct Instruction

• Explain that animals are grouped into different categories based on their characteristics, such as their physical features, habits, and where they live.
• Show the pictures of different animals and ask students to classify them into their appropriate categories.
• Explain the characteristics and classification of each category of animal, using the handouts as a reference.

Guided Practice

• Divide the class into small groups and give each group a set of the classified animal pictures.
• Have the groups work together to classify the animals into their appropriate categories, using the characteristics discussed in class.
• Have each group present their work to the class, explaining their reasoning for each classification.

Independent Practice

• Have students work on a project-based activity where they research and create their own animal classification system.
• Students can use the characteristics discussed in class as a guide for what factors to include in their system, but they should also consider additional factors that may be important to them.
• Have students present their classification systems to the class, explaining their reasoning for each classification.

Closure

• Review the main points of class, including the characteristics used to classify animals and the different taxonomic levels.
• Ask students to share one thing they learned about animal classification today.

Assessment

• Observe students during the guided and independent practice activities to assess their understanding of the material.
• Collect and review their classification worksheets to assess their ability to correctly classify animals.
