2.5A Physical Properties Of Matter Lesson Plan for 2nd Grade Students

Topic: Classification of matter by physical properties

Objectives & Outcomes

  • Students will be able to classify matter by physical properties, including relative temperature, texture, flexibility, and whether material is a solid or liquid.

Materials

  • Chart paper or whiteboard
  • Markers or chalk
  • Various objects that can be used to demonstrate the four physical properties (e.g. ice for relative temperature, a piece of clothing for texture, a Rubber Band for flexibility, a jar of water for whether material is a solid or liquid)

Warm-Up

  • Show students a variety of objects and ask them to classify the objects based on one physical property each (e.g. cold objects for relative temperature, smooth objects for texture, flexible objects for flexibility, liquid objects for whether material is a solid or liquid).
  • After a few examples, ask students to share their answers with a partner.

Direct Instruction

  • Review the definitions of relative temperature, texture, flexibility, and solid/liquid with the students.
  • Show students additional objects and have them classify them based on the physical properties discussed.

Guided Practice

  • Have students work in pairs to classify additional objects based on their physical properties.
  • Have the students share their classifications with the class and discuss any differences in their classifications.

Independent Practice

  • Have students choose one physical property to focus on for a project-based activity.
  • Have the students research the physical properties of a specific object and create a model or representation of the object based on their research.
  • Have the students present their models or representations to the class.

Closure

  • Review the main points of the lesson, including the different physical properties of matter and how to classify matter based on these properties.
  • Ask the students to share something they learned during the lesson.

Assessment

  • Observe the students during the guided practice and independent practice activities to ensure they are correctly classifying matter and using the correct physical properties to do so.
  • Collect the students' posters and assess their understanding of the main points of the lesson through their explanations and visual representations of the different matter -types.
