Topic: Teaching Phonics

Objectives & Outcomes

• Students will be able to identify and pronounce the basic sounds of the English language.

Materials

• Chart with the phonetic symbols for each sound (such as

/\ for "short A")

• Small stuffed animals or objects for each sound (e.g. cat for "short A")
• Pen or marker for each student

Warm-up

• Show the students the chart with the phonetic symbols and give them a few examples of how to use them (e.g. "short A" is represented by /\, so we could say "cat" and "hat" using those symbols).
• Have the students try to identify the sound of each small stuffed animal or object.
