Topic: Distinguishing characteristics of folktales, fables, and fairy tales

Objectives & Outcomes

  • Students will be able to identify and describe the distinguishing characteristics of folktales, fables, and fairy tales.

Materials

  • Illustrations of folktales, fables, and fairy tales
  • handouts with list of characteristics
  • art supplies (for independent practice)

Warm-up

  • Begin by asking students to brainstorm a list of their favorite folktales, fables, and fairy tales. Write their names on the board.
  • Using the list of names, ask students to share their favorite folktales, fables, and fairy tales with the class.
  • As students share, write their favorite folktales, fables, and fairy tales on the board.

Direct Instruction

  • Introduce the term "folktale." Explain that a folktale is a story that was originally told by people in a particular culture to explain natural phenomena or to teach a moral lesson.
  • Introduce the term "fable." Explain that a fable is a type of folktale that features animals and birds as the main characters and often includes a lesson or moral.
  • Introduce the term "fairy tale." Explain that a fairy tale is a type of folktale that features magical or mythical creatures such as fairies, goblins, or witches and often includes a happy ending.
  • Read a few examples of each type of folktale (folktale, fable, fairy tale) to the class. As you read, point out the distinguishing characteristics of each type of folktale, such as the characters, setting, and moral lesson.

Guided Practice

  • Have students work in pairs or small groups to create their own definition of each type of folktale (folktale, fable, fairy tale). Encourage them to use examples from the stories they have read to support their definitions.
  • Ask each group to share their definitions with the class and discuss any differences or similarities in their definitions.
  • As a class, create a chart with the definitions of each type of folktale on it.

Independent Practice

  • Have students choose one type of folktale (folktale, fable, fairy tale) to research.
  • Encourage them to use multiple sources such as books, websites, and videos to find information about their chosen type of folktale.
  • Ask students to create a presentation (e.g. poster, slide show) to share their findings with the class.

Closure

  • Review the characteristics of each type of folktale and discuss how they can be found in well-known children’s literature.
  • Ask students to share their thoughts on what makes folktales, fables, and fairy tales so popular and interesting.

Assessment

  • Observe students during independent practice to assess their ability to find examples of folktales, fables, and fairy tales in well-known children’s literature.
  • Have students complete a written reflection on what they have learned about folktales, fables, and fairy tales.
