2.8(C) Describe And Understand Plot Elements, Including The Main Events, The Conflict, And The Resolution, For Texts Read Aloud And Independently Lesson Plan for 2nd Grade Students

Topic: Plot Elements

Objectives & Outcomes:

  • Students will be able to describe the main events in a text.
  • Students will be able to identify and describe the conflict in a text.
  • Students will be able to explain the resolution in a text.

Materials

  • A selection of texts for reading aloud (e.g. stories, poems, etc.)
  • Post-it notes or blank cards
  • Markers or crayons

Warm-up

  • Begin by asking students to think about a book or story that they have read recently.
  • Have them share their thoughts with a partner, discussing what happened in the story and how the events were connected.
  • Change partners often and continue to have students share their thoughts until everyone has had a chance to share.

Direct Instruction

  • Define the terms "plot," "main events," "conflict," and "resolution" for the class.
  • Use examples from the stories that students shared to demonstrate what each of these terms means.
  • Have students work with a partner to brainstorm a list of main events from the story they shared earlier.
  • Have students work with a new partner to list the conflict and resolution for the main events that they listed.

Guided Practice

  • Have students reread their story and work with a partner to identify the plot elements (i.e. the main events, the conflict, and the resolution) in their story.
  • Have students share their plot elements with the class, and have a discussion about what each of these terms means.

Independent Practice

  • Have students choose another story to read independently, and have them reread the story to identify the plot elements (i.e. the main events, the conflict, and the resolution).
  • Have students create a graphic organizer to show the main events, the conflict, and the resolution in their story.
  • Have students share their graphic organizers with the class, and have a discussion about what each of these terms means.

Closure

  • Review the main points of the lesson, and ask students to share one thing they learned about plot elements.
  • Encourage students to continue to pay attention to plot elements when they are reading, and ask them to share one example of a plot element they found interesting or surprising in their most recent reading.

Assessment

  • Observe students during independent practice to assess their understanding of plot elements.
  • Collect and review the students' narratives to assess their ability to describe and understand plot elements.
  • Administer a quiz at a later date to assess students' retention of the concept of plot elements.
