Topic: Author’s purpose and using text evidence

Objectives & Outcomes

• Students will be able to identify the author’s purpose in a given text.
• Students will be able to use text evidence to support their responses.

Materials

• A variety of texts (including fiction and nonfiction)
• Markers or pens
• Post-it notes or sticky flags
• Composition notebooks

Warm-up

• Begin by asking students if they can recall any books they have read recently. Ask them to share a little bit about the book and the author’s purpose for writing it (e.g. to entertain, to teach, to inform).
• Next, show students a picture or illustration and ask them to make a guess about the text based on what they see (e.g. a picture of an airplane might lead to a guess that the text is about an airplane or flying).

Direct Instruction

• Introduce the concept of author’s purpose and explain that authors have different reasons for writing their texts.
• Use the handouts to review the different types of author’s purpose (e.g. to entertain, to teach, to inform).
• Demonstrate how to use text evidence to support an appropriate response. Show students how to look for specific words or phrases in the text that support their response (e.g. if the text says “how to tie a bowtie,” the response should be “this text is about how to tie a bowtie).

Guided Practice

• Have students work in pairs or groups and provide each group with a nonfiction or fiction book.
• Have students identify the type of text (nonfiction or fiction) and use text evidence to support an appropriate response.
• Have students share their responses with the class and discuss as a group.

Independent Practice

• Have students choose a nonfiction or fiction book and complete a project that demonstrates their understanding of author's purpose and the use of text evidence. This could be a presentation, t-chart, or written explanation.

Closure

• Review the key concepts of author's purpose and the use of text evidence and have students share their projects.

Assessment

• Observe students during independent practice to assess their understanding of the concepts.
• Collect and assess the projects for understanding of author's purpose and use of text evidence.
• Administer a quiz or test to assess students' understanding of the concepts taught in the lesson.
