Topic: Basketball skills and dribbling

Objectives & Outcomes

  • Students will be able to demonstrate proper dribbling techniques for a basketball.

Materials

  • Basketballs
  • Marker or pen
  • Paper

Warm-up

  • Review the different parts of a basketball (bounce, handle, arc, etc.)
  • Review the different dribbling techniques (around the body, between the legs, etc.)

Direct Instruction

  • Demonstrate proper dribbling technique, emphasizing the different parts of the basketball and the different dribbling techniques
  • Show students how to dribble with both hands, with their weaker hand, and with their stronger hand
  • Have students practice dribbling with the different techniques, being sure to emphasize proper technique and body position

Guided Practice

  • Pass out basketballs and have students work in pairs or small groups to practice dribbling.
  • Walk around and assist students as needed, showing them how to adjust their technique and reminding them to keep their bodies low and stable.

Independent Practice:

  • Have students practice dribbling in a large circle, with one student dribbling a basketball while the others act as defenders trying to steal the ball.
  • Encourage students to use proper dribbling technique and to try to stay low and stable as they dribble.

Closure:

  • Have students share their favorite parts of the lesson and what they learned.
  • Remind students to practice their basketball skills and dribbling at home or at the park.

Assessment:

  • Observe students during the dribbling and shooting stations to see if they are using proper technique and form.
  • Collect and review the basketball dribbling and shooting worksheets for accuracy and completeness.
