Topic: SummerTime

Description:Students will learn about summertime by creating a sand painting.

Objectives & Outcomes

• Students will be able to identify the characteristics of summertime and understand the importance of this season.

Materials

• Sand
• Paint
• Gloves
• Trays or bowls to hold the sand and paint
• Styrofoam shapes (e.g. stars, circles, squares) for use as templates
• Construction paper and markers for decoration

Warm-Up

• Review the concept of seasons and ask students to name the seasons they know.
• Ask students to share any summer memories they have and explain how summer is different from other seasons.

Direct Instruction

• Introduce the concept of sand painting and explain that it is a way of creating art out of sand.
• Show students how to make a simple sand painting using different colors and patterns.
• Demonstrate how to sprinkle the sand onto a paper or canvas and how to pat it down to create a design.
• Explain that different colors and patterns can create different moods and emotions.
