Topic: Vibrato (introduction to subtle pitch variation)

Objectives & Outcomes

• Students will be able to identify vibrato and understand its function in music.

Materials:

• Music with vibrato
• Pen and paper for each student

Warm-up

• Play a piece of music with vibrato and have the students listen for any changes in the pitch of the music. Ask them to raise their hand if they hear any changes in pitch.
• Once all the students have raised their hands, ask them to explain why the music is changing pitch.

Direct Instruction

• Introduce the term "vibrato" and explain that it is a subtle variation in pitch that is used to add expression to music.
• Demonstrate how to create vibrato by making small, gentle shakes in the pitch of a note.
• Have the students repeat the demonstration with you, trying to create vibrato on their own notes.

Guided Practice

• Have the students play a note on their instrument and have them focus on creating vibrato as they play.
• As they play, walk around the room and provide feedback and guidance on how well the students are creating vibrato.

Independent Practice

• Have the students create a short sequence of notes and then add vibrato to each note as they play.
• Encourage the students to listen to each other and provide feedback and guidance on how well the students are creating vibrato.

Closure

• Review the concept of vibrato and the difference between vibrato and tremolo.
• Have the students share any challenges or successes they had adding vibrato to their playing.
