Topic: Rythem

Objectives & Outcomes

• By the end of this lesson, students will be able to tap along with the rythem of a song.

Materials

• Speaker with a song playing
• Handouts with simple rythem patterns (e.g. "1-2-3-4" or "ta-ta-ti-ti")
• Pencils and paper for students to take notes

Warm-up

• Review what a rythem is and what it is used for in music.
• Play a song and have students tap along with the rythem. This should be a simple rythem that they can easily follow.

Direct Instruction

• Introduce the concept of a rythem in more detail, explaining that it is the pattern of repetition that occurs in music.
• Play another song and have students tap along with the rythem.
• Have students listen for the rythem and try to tap along with it themselves.

Guided Practice

• Play another song and have students tap along with the rythem.
• Have students work in pairs or small groups to help each other tap along with the rythem.
• As a class, discuss how the tapping helps them to stay focused on the rythem.

Independent Practice

• Have students choose a song that they like and print out the lyrics.
• Have students tap along with the rythem as they read the lyrics out loud to the class.
• Encourage students to use body movement and facial expressions to add personality to their reading.

Closure

• Have students share their favorite part of the lesson and what they learned.
• Ask students to bring in a song of their choosing for the next lesson.

Assessment

• Observe student during independent practice to ensure they are able to tap along with a song.
• Collect and review students' rhythm books to assess their understanding of the concept and their ability to communicate it through drawing and writing.
