Topic: Producing a sound on the flute in order to play a song

Objectives & Outcomes

• Students will be able to produce a sound on the flute in order to play a song.

Materials

• Flutes
• Song sheets with lyrics and musical notation
• Pencils or pens

Warm-up

• Review the parts of the flute and their names (mouthpiece, body, pipe, fipple)
• Have the students practice singing along to a song without the aid of the flute, focusing on pronunciation and rhythm

Direct Instruction

• Introduce the flute and its parts
• Demonstrate how to hold the flute and position the mouthpiece
• Explain the concept of making a sound on the flute by blowing into the mouthpiece and vibrating the pipe
• Have the students practice making a sound on the flute, first with the help of the teacher, then independently

Guided Practice

• Demonstrate how to play a song on the flute by playing a simplified version of the song
• Have the students watch and follow along as the teacher demonstrates how to play the song
• Then, have the students practice playing the song on their own, with the help of the teacher

Independent Practice

• Have the students continue to practice playing the song on their own, with the help of the teacher
