Topic: Overview of the flute instrument

Objectives & Outcomes

• Students will understand the basic parts of a flute and how they work together to produce sound.

Materials

• Flutes
• Drawing paper
• Pencils

Warm-up

• Have the students sit in a circle.
• Hold up a flute and ask the students if they have ever seen a flute before.
• Ask them to share what they remember about the flute.
• Write down their responses on the drawing paper.
• Review the responses and explain any misconceptions.

Direct Instruction

• Show the students a picture of a flute and explain what it is.
• Explain the parts of the flute and give a brief description of their functions.
• Demonstrate how to hold the flute and perform a scale on it.
• If possible, have a student try out the flute.

Guided Practice

• Have students work in pairs and give each pair a flute.
• Have them practice performing a scale on their flutes while the teacher checks their technique.
• If possible, have the teacher demonstrate a scale on a flute to model how it is done.

Independent Practice

• Have students work in small groups and create a brief presentation on the history of the flute. They can research and present information on different flute players and their contributions to the flute.

Closure

• Review the key concepts of the lesson, including the parts of the flute and its history. Encourage students to share what they learned and ask any remaining questions.

Assessment

• Observe students during the independent practice activity and provide feedback on their demonstration of knowledge and skills. Collect and grade the posters or presentations created during the independent practice activity. Alternatively, a quiz or written assessment could be given to assess students' understanding of the key concepts.
