Topic: Introduction to different musical styles (classical, jazz, folk, etc.)

Objectives & Outcomes:

• Students will be able to define the different musical styles of classical, jazz, and folk music and identify examples of each style.

Materials

• Pictures or videos of classical, jazz, and folk music (optional)
• Handouts with definitions and examples of each musical style

Warm-up

• Ask students if they have ever heard any music that was unfamiliar to them.
• Ask them to describe the music to you and what they thought of it.
• Encourage them to use words like "happy," "sad," "exciting," or "calm" to describe their feelings about the music.

Direct Instruction

• Show students pictures or videos of different musical styles, such as classical, jazz, folk, and rock.
• Ask students to name the genre of each piece of music and describe what they like or don't like about it.
• Explain that there are many different types of music and each genre has its own unique characteristics.

Guided Practice

• Have students work in small groups to identify different musical genres and describe the characteristics of each one.
• Have each group share their findings with the class.
• As a class, create a chart listing the different genres and their characteristics.

Independent Practice

• Have students choose one musical genre to research in depth.
• Students can use technology (e.g. computers, tablets, etc.) to find information about their chosen genre.
• Students will create a poster or presentation to share their findings with the class.

Closure

• Review the main points of the lesson (the different types of musical genres, examples of each, and how they are different from one another).
• Ask students to share their thoughts and observations about the different musical genres.

Assessment

• Observe students during the group and independent practice activities to see if they are able to listen to and identify the different musical genres.
• Evaluate students' posters or presentations on their chosen musical genre or artist for understanding of the topic and ability to communicate their thoughts and observations.
