Topic: Intervals and scales

Objectives & Outcomes

• Students will be able to identify and define intervals and scales.

Materials

• Whiteboard and markers
• Pictures of intervals and scales (can be from a music textbook or website)

Warm-up

• Ask students if they have heard of the term "interval" before.
• Ask students to give an example of an interval.
• Write their responses on the whiteboard.
• Ask students if they have heard of the term "scale" before.
• Ask students to give an example of a scale.
• Write their responses on the whiteboard.

Direct Instruction

• Show students a scale on the whiteboard or on a piece of paper.
• Ask students to identify the lowest note and the highest note on the scale.
• Ask students to identify the intervals between each note on the scale.
• Record the intervals on the whiteboard or on a separate piece of paper.
• Repeat this process for different scales, such as the pentatonic scale and the major scale.

Guided Practice

• Have students work in pairs to identify the intervals between each note on a different scale.
• Have each pair share their answers with the class and discuss any differences in their answers.

Independent Practice

• Have students choose a favorite song and create a scale diagram to show the intervals between each note in the song's scale.
• Encourage students to use their scale diagrams to help them practice singing their favorite songs.

Closure

• Review the concept of intervals and scales and the importance of understanding them in order to sing and play music.
• Have students share their scale diagrams and explain how they can be used to help understand and practice singing and playing music.

Assessment

• Observe students during independent practice to assess their understanding of the concept of intervals and scales.
• Have students complete a short quiz or worksheet on intervals and scales to assess their understanding.
