Topic: Incorporating stylistic elements into flute exercises

Objectives & Outcomes

• Students will be able to incorporate stylistic elements into flute exercises by the end of the lesson.

Warm-up

• Have students play the simple scale exercise G Major scale up and down two octaves (8 notes)
• Have students perform the scale with a metronome at a slow and then medium tempo, making sure to play each note accurately and with a clear tone

Direct Instruction

• Explain to students that flute exercises are a way for them to practice and improve their technique
• Introduce the concept of stylistic elements and how they can be incorporated into flute exercises
• Demonstrate how to play the scale with various stylistic elements, such as rubato, staccato, legato, and marcato
• Have students watch and listen as you demonstrate each element, then have them try it themselves with the scale exercise

Guided Practice

• Demonstrate the scale exercise and the various stylistic elements once more
• Have students work in pairs and take turns playing the scale exercise while the other student manipulates the various stylistic elements
• Encourage students to listen closely to the differences in sound and technique between the two players
• Have students share their findings with the class

Independent Practice

• Have students work on creating their own scale exercise incorporating stylistic elements
• Encourage them to be creative and have fun with this project
• Allow students time to work on this project independently and allow them to present their scales to the class

Closure

• Review the concept of adding stylistic elements to scale exercises
• Ask students to share their scale exercises with the class
• Allow students to give feedback and support to their classmates

Assessment

• Observe students during independent practice to see if they are able to successfully incorporate stylistic elements into their scale exercises
• Have students turn in their completed scale exercises for assessment
