2nd Grade Basic Fingerings And Note Recognition Lesson Plan Example (Music)

Topic: Basic fingerings and note recognition

Objectives & Outcomes

  • Students will be able to use proper fingerings for the chromatic scale and be able to identify the names of all the notes on the staff.

Materials

  • Chromatic scale card (one card for each student)
  • Staff cards (one card for each student)
  • Note cards (one card for each student)
  • Chord chart (optional)

Warm-Up

  • Have students play a simple melody with their fingers, such as "Mary Had a Little Lamb." As they play, have them point to the notes on the staff as they play them.
  • Have them play the melody again, but this time, have them name the notes as they play them.
  • Repeat with a few different melodies.

Direct Instruction

  • Show students the note names and corresponding finger numbers on the staff.
  • Have students practice playing simple melodies on the keyboard, using the proper fingerings for each note.
  • Have them name the notes as they play them, then check their accuracy by checking the notated melody against their fingerings.

Guided Practice

  • Have students work in pairs or small groups, giving one student the melody to play and the other student(s) the task of naming the notes and checking the fingerings.

Independent Practice

  • Have students work on a project-based activity in which they create their own simple melodies and write the fingerings and note names next to each note. They can then share their melodies with the class and have everyone try to play along.

Closure

  • Review the fingerings and note names for each of the four strings in the open position.
  • Ask students to sing the do-re-mi-fa-sol-la-ti-do melody, and have them place their fingers on the proper frets when they come to the note names.

Assessment

  • Observe students during independent practice to check their accuracy in placing their fingers on the correct frets. Have students play their completed songs for you and ask them to point out the notes on the guitar as they play.
