  • Students will be able to multiply numbers up to 10 by 1, 2, or 3 to give an answer up to 30.

Materials

  • Clock with hands
  • Clock with digital display
  • Calculator (optional)

Warm-up

  • Show the students a clock with hands and ask them to identify the different parts of the clock.
  • Ask them to describe how they can tell the time on a clock with digital display.

Direct Instruction

  • Introduce the concept of time zones and the different time zones around the globe.
  • Show the students the map and point out the different time zones.
  • Use the clock and the globe to demonstrate how different time zones can lead to a difference in time.
  • Explain how people in different time zones can use the same clock to tell the time, but the time will be different depending on the time zone.

Guided Practice

  • Show the students the globe and have them locate their home country/state/city.
  • Have the students take turns with a partner and use the globe to find another country/state/city and locate its time zone.
  • Explain to the students that even if they are using the same clock to tell the time, the time will be different in different time zones.
  • Have the students compare the time zones of the two places they have located and discuss the differences.

Independent Practice

  • Give each student a piece of paper and a pen.
  • Ask the students to choose two different countries/states/cities and find their time zones.
  • Have the students use their pens to draw a line between the two locations on their papers and write the time zones next to each line.
  • Then have the students add up the two time zones and write the answer on their papers.
  • Have the students share their papers with the class and explain their thinking.

Closure

  • Review the importance of knowing different time zones and how it can help us plan our days and meetings.
  • Ask the students to share one thing they learned about time zones today.

Assessment: Observe the students during the lesson and see if they are able to accurately tell the difference in time between two time zones. Check their work on the time zone quiz to see if they understand the concept and have been able to apply it.
