Objectives & Outcomes

• Students will be able to fluently multiply and divide simple numbers to 100.

Materials

• Whiteboard and markers
• Handouts with simple multiplication and division problems (e.g. 4 × 7, 6 ÷ 2, etc.)
• Calculators (optional)

Warm-up

• Review the meanings of multiplication and division.
• Give examples of problems that require multiplication (e.g. 4 × 7) and ones that require division (e.g. 6 ÷ 2).

Direct Instruction

• Introduce the multiplication tables up to the 6 times 6 multiplication table.
• Have the students repeat the multiplication tables after you.
• Show the students how to use the multiplication tables to multiply two-digit numbers.
• Demonstrate how to use the multiplication tables to multiply three-digit numbers.
• Introduce the division tables up to the 6 times 4 division table.
• Have the students repeat the division tables after you.
• Show the students how to use the division tables to divide two-digit numbers.
• Demonstrate how to use the division tables to divide three-digit numbers.

Guided Practice

• Have the students work in pairs to practice multiplying and dividing two-digit and three-digit numbers using the multiplication and division tables.
• Have the students work in pairs to check their answers using the multiplication and division tables.

Independent Practice

• Give each student a copy of a two-digit or three-digit number multiplied by a two-digit or three-digit number (e.g., 27 x 47).
• Have the students use their multiplication and division skills to find the answer to the problem and write it on a piece of paper.
• Have the students turn in their papers and check their answers with a partner.

Closure

• Review the concept of multiplication and division with the students.
• Ask the students to share something that they learned during the lesson.

Assessment
