Measuring Area And Perimeter In Square Units Lesson Plan for 2nd Grade Example Students

Topic: Measuring area and perimeter in square units

Objectives & Outcomes

  • Students will be able to identify and name square units.
  • Students will be able to measure the area and perimeter of a given square surface.

Materials

  • Construction paper
  • Cubes measuring different sizes (e.g. 1cm, 10cm, etc.)
  • Markers or crayons
  • Pencils or pens

Warm-up

  • Show the class a square surface and ask them to identify its name.
  • Ask the students to stand up and form a square with their bodies, have them change positions until they have formed a perfect square.
  • Ask the students to sit down and draw a square on the paper, have them label the four sides with the word "side" and the corner with the word "corner".
  • Ask the students to stand up and designate a side as "A" and the corner as "B", have them designate the other sides as "B-to-C" and "C-to-A".

Direct Instruction

  • Introduce the concept of perimeter and explain that it is the total distance around the edge of a shape.
  • Show the students the cube and ask them to find the perimeter by counting the number of sides and adding them up.
  • Introduce the concept of area and explain that it is the amount of space within a shape, calculated by multiplying the length times the width.
  • Show the students the cube and ask them to find the area by multiplying the length of each side and then multiplying by the width.

Guided Practice

  • Give the students a few practice problems to solve on their own, such as finding the perimeter of a square with dimensions 2x2 or the area of a rectangle with dimensions 5x3.
  • Have the students work in pairs or small groups and give them a set of cubes in different shapes and ask them to find the perimeter and area.

Independent Practice

  • Have the students work in small groups and create their own zoo with different types of animals.
  • Each group will be given a set of cubes in different shapes and sizes and will have to measure and find the perimeter and area of the different surfaces.
  • The students will share their zoos with the class and explain their calculations.

Closure

  • Review the concepts of perimeter and surface area and ask the students to share their favorite animals and the areas they measured.

Assessment

  • Observe the students as they measure the areas and provide feedback. -Have the students share their results and what their favorite animals are. -Administer a short quiz to assess the students understanding of the concepts.
