Objectives & Outcomes

  • Students will be able to identify 2d and 3d shapes.

Materials

  • Chart of different 2d and 3d shapes
  • Pictures of 2d and 3d objects (e.g. dollhouse, toys, objects from nature)

Warm-up

  • Show the students a picture of a 2d object and ask them to guess what it is.
  • Show the students a picture of a 3d object and ask them to guess what it is.
  • Ask the students if they can think of any objects around them that are 2d or 3d.
  • Write their answers on the board.

Direct Instruction

  • Show the students pictures of 2d and 3d objects and ask them to identify which is which.
  • Demonstrate how to identify the dimensions of an object by looking at its shape and its size.
  • Tell the students that some objects can be considered to be in between 2d and 3d, and that these objects have 2d and 3d characteristics. For example, a cube has 6 faces, each of which is a flat 2d shape, but it has 3d dimensions because it has a size and a volume.

  • As a class, discuss the different objects and their dimensions.

  • Have the students draw a picture of a 2d object and a 3d object and label their dimensions.
  • Have the students share their pictures with the class and explain their choices for the dimensions of their objects.

Closure

  • Review the vocabulary words for 2d and 3d shapes and their dimensions.
  • Ask the students to share or demonstrate their understanding of the concepts learned today.
