Topic: Data handling

Objectives & Outcomes

• Students will be able to collect, organize, and analyze data for information.

Materials

• Data sheets or worksheets with a variety of questions (e.g. simple counting, comparing values, asking "what if" questions)
• Pencils or pens
• Calculator (optional)

Warm-up

• Ask students if they have ever seen or collected data before. What kinds of data did they collect? How did they organize it?
• Show students a set of data and ask them to describe what they see. What patterns do they notice?

Direct Instruction

• Define data and explain that it is information that is collected and organized.
• Discuss the importance of data and how it can be used to make decisions and predictions.
• Demonstrate how to label the columns and rows of a spreadsheet or how to organize data in a chart or graph.
• Explain how to use the various tools and options in a spreadsheet or data-collecting app to format and analyze the data.

Guided Practice

• Have students work in pairs to complete a short worksheet or activity that asks them to use a data-collecting app or spreadsheet to gather and organize data.
• Have students use the tools and options in the app or spreadsheet to format and analyze the data.
• Review the answers as a class and discuss any questions or challenges students faced.

Independent Practice

• Have students use a data-collecting app or spreadsheet to gather and organize data over a period of time (e.g. a week).
• Have students use the tools and options in the app or spreadsheet to format and analyze the data.
• Encourage students to be creative and think critically about their data and the patterns they see.
• Have students create a presentation or report to share their findings with the class.

• Review the key concepts and skills learned in the lesson.
