Topic:Basic Geometry

Objectives & Outcomes

• Students will be able to identify and name basic shapes and understand their properties.

Materials

• Large poster board or wall space
• Markers or crayons
• Assorted small objects such as buttons, beads, pom-poms, or other 3D shapes

Warm-up

• Ask the students to brainstorm a list of different shapes they might see around them.Write their responses on the poster board or wall.
• Discuss the properties of each shape, such as whether it has straight sides or curved sides, and if it can be folded in half without overlapping.

Direct Instruction

• Introduce the names of the basic geometric shapes:
• Circle: A round shape with no straight sides
• Rectangle: A square shape with four straight sides
• Triangle: A shape with three sides, where two sides are connected by a corner
• Disco

Guided Practice:

• Have the students work in pairs to draw and label the geometric shapes on blank paper.
• Walk around the room to provide assistance and guidance as needed.

Independent Practice:

• Have the students use the blank paper to create their own geometric shapes, using the basic geometric shapes (rectangle, square, triangle, circle) as a guide.
• Encourage them to be creative and to think outside the box.
• Provide assistance and guidance as needed.

Closure:

• Review the properties of each of the basic geometric shapes and how they can be used to create various geometric
• shapes.
• Ask the students to share their creations with the class and discuss how they used the basic geometric shapes to create
• them.

Assessment:

• Observe the students during the independent practice activity and provide feedback on their use of the basic geometric shapes to
• create geometric shapes.
• Evaluate the students' creations and provide feedback on their accuracy and use of the basic geometric shapes.
