Ascending And Descending Order Lesson Plan for 2nd Grade Example Students

Topic: Ascending and descending order

Objectives & Outcomes

  • Students will be able to identify and compare numbers in ascending and descending order.

Materials

  • Whiteboard and markers
  • Numbers from 1-100
  • Arrangement cards (one set for each pair of students)

Warm-up

  • Write the numbers 1-10 on the board, and have students call out the numbers in order, starting with 1 and ending with 10.
  • Ask students if they can think of any ways to organize the numbers from smallest to largest, and write their suggestions on the board.
  • Discuss the advantages of arranging numbers in ascending order (e.g. it is easier to find the largest number in a list if the numbers are in ascending order)

Direct Instruction

  • Define the terms "ascending order" and "descending order," and give examples of lists that are organized in each way (e.g. the list of numbers 1-10 is in ascending order, but the list of numbers 100-1 is in descending order).
  • Explain that it is important to be able to identify numbers in ascending and descending order, because it can help us to understand more about the data we are looking at (e.g. if we are looking at the sales figures for a company for the past year, we will want to find the largest number first to see how much they earned overall).
  • Demonstrate how to identify numbers in ascending and descending order by giving examples with the numbers 1-10.

Guided Practice

  • Give each student a set of numbers and have them work in pairs to identify which numbers are in ascending order and which are in descending order.
  • Have a class discussion about the different ways that the pairs identified the numbers and why they chose to do it that way.

Independent Practice

  • Have students work in small groups to create a skit or a poster that illustrates ascending and descending order.
  • Have each group present their skit or poster to the class.

Closure

  • Review the concept of ascending and descending order and the symbols used to represent it.
  • Ask students to give examples of items in ascending and descending order.

Assessment

  • Observe students during independent practice to see if they are using the correct symbol and ordering the items correctly.
  • Collect and review their written or oral presentations to assess their understanding of the concept.
