Objectives & Outcomes

  • Students will understand what self-awareness means and be able to demonstrate self-awareness by identifying their own emotions and those of others.

Materials

  • Images of people displaying different emotions (e.g. happy, sad, angry, surprised)
  • Handouts with different emotions and their definitions

Warm-up

  • Ask students to think about a time when they felt a certain emotion and explain what happened to make them feel that way.
  • Have a few students share their experiences and engage the class in a discussion about emotions and how they can be helpful or harmful.

Direct Instruction

  • Introduce the concept of emotions and explain that our feelings can influence the way we behave and think.
  • Use the handouts to teach the names of different emotions and have students practice recognizing them in themselves and others.
  • role-play situations where it might be helpful to recognize and manage different emotions and encourage students to try different strategies to cope with their emotions.

Guided Practice

  • Divide the class into small groups and give each group a set of emotion face cards or pictures.
  • Have the groups work together to match the emotion cards to the correct descriptions and discuss why each match is correct.
  • Afterwards, review the correct matches with the whole class and discuss any issues or questions that arose during the exercise.

Independent Practice

  • Give each student a set of emotion face cards or pictures.
  • Ask the students to work independently to match the emotion cards to the correct descriptions and write down the correct matches.
  • Afterwards, have the students present their matches to the class and explain why each match is correct.

Closure

  • Have the students share one thing they learned about emotions during the lesson.
  • Remind the students that it is important to be able to recognize and label emotions in ourselves and others, because it helps us understand and deal with our feelings.

Assessment

  • Observe the students during the independent practice activity and take note of which emotions they were able to identify and label in the photos.
  • Ask the students to reflect on their own emotions during the guided practice activity and then share with the class what they learned about themselves.
