Mercy Lesson Plan for 2nd Grade Example Students

Topic: Kindness

Objectives & Outcomes

  • Students will understand the concept of being kind and will be able to demonstrate this by performing acts of kindness.

Materials

  • Pencils and paper for each student
  • Examples of acts of kindness (e.g. a student brings treats for their classmates on their birthday, a student compliments a classmate on their new outfit)

Warm-up

  • Have students sit in a circle.
  • Have one student come to the center of the circle and think of an act of kindness that they could perform for their classmates.
  • Have the student share their idea with the class and ask for feedback and suggestions.
  • Once a few ideas have been shared, have the students brainstorm a list of possible acts of kindness.

Direct Instruction

  • Introduce the concept of kindness and explain that it is about doing thoughtful or generous things for others.
  • Use the example of the student coming up with an idea for an act of kindness to illustrate the brainstorming process.
  • Explain the Kagan strategy of brainstorming and how it can be used to come up with a variety of ideas.
  • Have the students take out their worksheets and brainstorm a list of possible acts of kindness that they could perform for their classmates.

Guided Practice

  • Have the students work in pairs to discuss their ideas and come up with a final act of kindness for each pair.
  • Have the students write their final act of kindness on the worksheet and explain why they chose it.

Independent Practice

  • Have the students choose one of the final acts of kindness and create a picture or drawing to illustrate it.
  • Have the students glue their picture or drawing onto the worksheet and explain why they chose their chosen act of kindness.

Closure

  • Review the different acts of kindness that were discussed in the lesson.
  • Ask the students to think about times when they have shown kindness to others and share their examples with the class.
  • Encourage the students to continue showing kindness to others and remind them that it can make a big difference.

Assessment

  • Observe the students during the guided practice activity to see if they are able to identify examples of kindness and explain why they are kind.
  • Evaluate the students' independent practice worksheets to see if they can correctly identify and explain examples of kindness.
  • Use the students' participation in the closure activity as a way to assess their understanding of the lesson.
