Warm-up

  • Then, ask students to name some famous nurses. Again, write their answers on the board.
  • Ask students if they know what a pioneer is. Explain that a pioneer is someone who does something for the first time or in a new way.
  • Introduce the topic of Mary Seacole and her role as a pioneer in nursing.

Direct Instruction

  • Explain that Mary Seacole was a Black British woman who became a pioneering nurse during the Crimean War.
  • Show the picture books to the students and read them aloud. Ask students to listen and take notes on the important information in the books.

  • Emphasize that Mary Seacole was a pioneer in nursing because she provided care to soldiers in the Crimean War, a war that took place a long distance away from Britain.
