Topic: Communication over time

Objectives & Outcomes

  • Students will be able to understand how communication has evolved over time and how it has impacted society.

Materials

  • Images of different modes of communication (e.g. telegraph, telephone, internet)
  • Timeline and/or calendar
  • Construction paper, scissors, glue

Warm-up

  • Ask students if they know what communication is and how it is used.
  • Introduce the topic of communication over time and ask students if they can think of any different ways people have communicated in the past.

Direct Instruction

  • Show students pictures or illustrations of different types of communication from different time periods, such as hand-written letters, telegraphs, and telephones.
  • Ask students to describe the differences they see between the different types of communication.
  • Discuss the advantages and disadvantages of each type of communication, for example, hand-written letters can be more personal and take more time to send, while telephones can be more convenient and faster to use.
