Topic: Civil War

Objectives & Outcomes

  • Students will be able to explain 3 repercussions that the south had to face after losing the civil war.

Materials

  • Picture of a destroyed southern town
  • Map of the southern states
  • List of repercussions (e.g. rebuilding the towns, replacing lost crops and livestock, etc.)

Warm-up

  • Ask students if they know what the Civil War is.
  • Ask students if they know who won the civil war.
  • Ask students if they know what the repercussions of losing the civil war might be.

Direct Instruction

  • Define the word "repercussion."
  • Tell students that after the Civil War, the South had to face a number of repercussions, or negative consequences, as a result of losing the war.
  • List the 3 repercussions that the South had to face (listed below).
  • Have students repeat the repercussions after you.

Guided Practice

  • Have students work in small groups to come up with additional repercussions that the South had to face as a result of losing the Civil War.
  • Have each group share their additional repercussions with the class.

Independent Practice

  • Have students choose one of the repercussions that the South had to face as a result of losing the Civil War and research it further.
  • Have students create a project that helps to illustrate their chosen repercussion and share it with the class.

Closure

  • Review the 3 repercussions that the South had to face as a result of losing the Civil War.
  • Ask students to reflect on what they have learned about the Civil War and its repercussions.

Assessment:

  • Observe students during the class discussion and independent practice to assess their understanding of the 3 repercussions.
  • Evaluate the posters created during independent practice to assess students' ability to create a visual representation of one of the repercussions.
