Seasons Of The Year

Objectives:

    1. Students will be able to recognize the four seasons of the year.

      2. Students will be able to identify the weather related to each season.

        National Standards:

        • ACTFL Standard 1.1: Students engage in conversations, provide and obtain information, express feelings and emotions, and exchange opinions.
        • ACTFL Standard 3.1: Students reinforce and further their knowledge of other disciplines through the foreign language.
        • CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.SL.K.1: Participate in collaborative conversations with diverse partners about kindergarten topics and texts with peers and adults in small and larger groups.
        • CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.SL.K.4: Describe familiar people, places, things, and events and, with prompting and support, provide additional detail.

        Materials:

        • Pictures of each season
        • Weather flashcards
        • Classroom whiteboard or chart paper
        • Colorful markers
        • Arts and crafts materials (e.g. construction paper, crayons, glue)

        Warm-up:

Ask the students an open-ended question: "What is your favorite season and why?" Allow students to share their answers and discuss as a class.

            Direct Instruction:

Show pictures of each season and discuss the characteristics of each season, such as weather, clothing, and activities associated with each one. Use weather flashcards to demonstrate the different types of weather for each season.

                Guided Practice:

Active learning strategy: Seasons Wheel Activity

                    1. Divide the students into small groups.

                      2. Provide each group with construction paper, markers, and a brad fastener.

                        3. Instruct students to draw and label each season on the construction paper, then cut out four separate circles to represent each season.

                          4. Have students attach the circles with the brad fastener in the center to create a rotating seasons wheel.

                            5. Students can take turns spinning the wheel and identifying the season and its corresponding weather.

                              Independent Practice:

                                Project-based activity: Seasonal Collage

                                  1. Provide each student with a piece of construction paper and art supplies.

                                    2. Instruct students to create a collage depicting their favorite season by drawing or cutting out pictures related to that season.

                                      3. Encourage students to label their collage with the season and weather characteristics.

                                        Closure:

                                          Closure activity: Seasonal Song

Sing a song related to the seasons of the year, incorporating the weather and activities associated with each one. Have students participate by singing along and acting out the different seasons.

                                              Assessment:

Assess students informally during the guided practice and independent practice activities by observing their ability to identify and discuss the seasons and weather. Additionally, ask students to explain what they have learned about the seasons and weather at the end of the lesson.
