  • Pictures of each place

Warm-up

  • Ask students to draw a map of their neighbourhood.
  • Ask them to name the different places in their neighbourhood and what they do there.

Direct Instruction

  • Introduce the concept of a neighbourhood and explain that it is a group of houses or buildings that are close to each other.
  • Ask students to name the different places in their neighbourhood and explain what they do there. For example:
  • houses are where people live
  • parks are for playing and relaxing
  • shops are where people go to buy things they need
  • streets are where people drive or walk to get from one place to another
  • Ask students to share their drawings of their neighbourhoods with the class.

Guided Practice

  • Divide students into small groups and ask them to think about the different places in their neighbourhood and the things that happen there. For example:
  • a park is where people go to play, walk their dogs and relax
  • a shop is where people go to buy food and other things they need
  • a street is where people drive or walk to get from one place to another
  • a house is where people live and sleep
  • Have each group share their ideas with the class.
  • Pair students up and have them look at a map of their neighbourhood. Ask them to find the different places they identified in their group and mark them on the map.

Independent Practice

  • Ask students to choose one place in their neighbourhood that they would like to learn more about.
  • Have them create a poster or presentation about this place, including information about what it is, what happens there and why they like it.
  • Encourage students to use creative and expressive language to describe their chosen place and what they like about it.

Closure

  • Ask students to share their posters or presentations with the class.
  • Have a class discussion about the different places in their neighbourhood and the things that students like about them.
  • Ask students to think about what makes their neighbourhood special and different from other neighbourhoods.

Assessment

  • Observe students during the independent practice activity and give feedback on their understanding of the topic and their ability to communicate their thoughts and feelings about their neighbourhood.
  • Collect and review the posters or presentations to assess students' ability to gather and present information about their chosen place.
