Topic: New Vocabulary

Objectives & Outcomes

• Students will be able to identify and understand new vocabulary words related to school and help.

Materials

• List of new vocabulary words related to school and help
• Picture cards representing each new vocabulary word
• Writing paper and pencils/pens

Warm-up

• Review some basic school vocabulary, such as " pencil," " desk," "book," etc. Have students share what they know and attempt to use the words in sentences.
• Introduce the new vocabulary words and have students guess what they might mean based on the word stems. For example, "can" can mean "ability to" or " possibility of."

Direct Instruction

• Read the story or narrative text and stop at various points to discuss the new vocabulary words. Have students give examples of how they might use the words in their own lives or in the text.
• Use the flashcards to further reinforce the new vocabulary. Have students match the word with its definition and then repeat the word out loud.

Guided Practice

• Divide the students into small groups and give each group a set of flashcards. Have the students take turns presenting the flashcards and describing the words to the group. Encourage the other students to ask questions and make comments.

Independent Practice

• Give each student a sheet of paper and a pen. Ask them to find and draw a word from the flashcards that they have not already learned. Encourage them to use the context of the flashcard to understand the meaning of the word.

Closure

• Have the students share their drawings with the class and explain the meaning of their chosen word.
• Review the new vocabulary with the class.
• Ask the students to repeat the words and their meanings in-group.

Assessment:

• Observe the students during the independent practice activity and provide feedback on their ability to accurately represent their chosen word and its meaning in a drawing.
• Collect the students' drawings and review them to assess their understanding of the new vocabulary.
