Direct Instruction

  • Explain to students that today they will be writing about their favorite sport.
  • Read the prompt "I love sports because ____. I hate sports because ____." to students and model how to fill in the blanks with their own thoughts and feelings about their favorite sport.
  • Have students take out their pencils and papers and give them a few minutes to think about their favorite sport and how they can explain why they love it.
  • Explain that once students have their thoughts organized, they will use their writing skills to share them on their paper.

Guided Practice

  • Have students work in pairs and give each pair a prompt card with a question related to sports (e.g. "What do you like about playing sports?").
  • Have students take turns asking each other the questions and writing down the answers on their paper.
  • Encourage students to use specific details in their answers and to think about why they love their sport.

Independent Practice

  • Have students choose one sport they like to play and draw a picture of themselves playing that sport.
  • Have students write a paragraph about why they like to play their chosen sport and include specific details about what they like about it.

Closure

  • Have students share their drawings and paragraphs with the class.
  • Ask students to share any new insights they gained about sports and why they like to play them.

Assessment
