Topic: Speaking Lesson – Introduction to Weather

Objectives & Outcomes

  • Students will be able to identify different types of weather and describe the different conditions using proper vocabulary.

Materials

  • Pictures of different types of weather (e.g. clouds, rain, snow, sun, wind)
  • Vocabulary words for describing weather conditions (e.g. hot, cold, sunny, cloudy, wet, dry)
  • Chart paper and markers

Warm-up

  • Ask students to share their favorite type of weather and why. Write their responses on the chart paper.
  • Ask students if they can think of any words they use to describe the weather, and write their responses on the chart paper as well.

Direct Instruction

  • Introduce the topic of weather and the different types of weather (e.g. hot, cold, sunny, rainy). Show the pictures or videos of different types of weather and discuss them with the students.
  • Ask students to brainstorm a list of words they can use to describe the different types of weather. Write the words on the chart paper next to the pictures or videos.
  • Review the list of words with the students, using the weather pictures or videos as a guide. Emphasize the importance of using descriptive words in writing.

  • Divide the students into pairs or small groups. Give each group a piece of paper and have them think of a story they can write about the weather they have described.
  • Have the students share their story with their pair or small group and provide feedback and encouragement.

Independent Practice

  • Have the students choose a weather topic and write a short story about it. Encourage them to use descriptive language and detail in their writing.

Closure

  • Have the students share their stories with the class. Discuss the importance of using descriptive language and detail in writing.

Assessment

  • Observe the students during independent practice and provide feedback on their use of detail and descriptive language in their stories. -Consider having the students complete a writing checklist as a form of assessment.
