Solar System

Topic: Solar System

Objectives & Outcomes

  • Students will be able to identify the 8 types of planets in our solar system.

Materials

  • Pictures of the solar system (or a diagram of it)
  • Handouts with information about each type of planet
  • Pencils and paper for students to write down their new knowledge

Introduction

  • Show the students a picture of the solar system and ask them if they know what all of the things are called and what they are used for.
  • Let the students take turns answering and encourage them to use correct vocabulary.
  • After the students have had a chance to answer, explain that there are 8 different types of planets in our solar system and today they will learn about each one.

Direct Instruction

  • Show the students a picture of each type of planet and ask them to name it.
  • Explain that each planet is named after a Roman god or goddess and that they each have different sizes, colors, and compositions.
  • Use the handouts to provide more detailed information about the planets.
  • Ask the students to listen and take notes on the information provided.

Guided Practice

  • Divide the students into small groups and give each group a planet picture.
  • Ask the students to use the information from the handouts to identify the planet and tell its characteristics.
  • Have the students share their answers with the class and explain why they think it is named that way.

Independent Practice

  • Give each student a piece of paper and a pencil.
  • Ask the students to draw a picture of their favorite planet and write its characteristics under the picture.
  • Encourage the students to be creative and try to remember as much as they can about their planet.

Closure

  • Review the main points of the lesson with the students.
  • Ask the students to share their drawings and write about their favorite planets.Word Bank:
