Topic:Vowels and consonants, initial sounds

Objectives & Outcomes

• Students will be able to identify initial sounds of vowels and consonants.

Materials

• Alphabet cards with the letters A through Z
• Flash cards with pictures of items that start with the letter V or F
• Whiteboard and markers

Warm-up

• Show the students the alphabet cards and ask them to identify the initial sound of each letter.
• Write the letters on the whiteboard and have the students guess the initial sound.

Direct Instruction

• Introduce the letter V and explain that it makes the sound /v/.
• Show the students the alphabet card with the letter V and have them repeat the sound.
• Have the students repeat the sound several times, encouraging them to use their mouth and tongue to make the sound.
• Explain that the letter F makes the sound /f/.
• Show the students the alphabet card with the letter F and have them repeat the sound.
• Have the students repeat the sound several times, encouraging them to use their mouth and tongue to make the sound.
• Demonstrate how to write the letters V and F on the whiteboard and have the students repeat after you.

Guided Practice

• Cut out several small pieces of tissue paper and have the students use them to make the sounds /v/ and /f/.
• Have the students practice making the sounds while moving their mouths and tongues in the correct way.
• Have the students practice making the sounds while moving their mouths and tongues in the correct way while also writing the letters V and F on a piece of paper.

Independent Practice

• Have the students take turns coming to the front of the class and reading a word or sentence that contains the letter V or F.
• Have the students try to recognize the letters V and F when they see them in a word or sentence and raise their hand to let the teacher know.

Closure

• Review the sounds that the letters V and F make and how to say them.
• Have the students share any words or sentences that they learned during the lesson.

Assessment

• Observe the students during independent practice to ensure they are accurately writing the letters V and F.
• Collect and review the students' word lists to assess their learning.
