Is,Am,Are,Was,Were Lesson Plan for 2nd Grade Example Students

Topic: using "is", "am", "are", "was", "were" for present tense

Objectives & Outcomes

• Students will be able to correctly use is, am, are, was, and were to express present tense in a sentence.

Materials

• Flashcards with the words "is", "am", "are", "was", "were" on one side and corresponding nouns on the other
• Sentence strips with example sentences using the verbs
• Pen or pencil for each student

Warm-up

• Review the meanings of the verbs is, am, are, was, were by using flashcards and asking questions like "Is apple a fruit?" and "Am cat a mammal?"

Direct Instruction

• Write the six verbs on the board and have the students copy them into their notebooks.
• Review the meaning of each verb, using flashcards or handouts with pictures.
• Practice using the verbs in sentences, such as "I am a boy."

Guided Practice

• Have the students work in pairs and take turns practicing the six verbs with each other.
• Encourage them to use the correct tense for each verb and to use correct spelling.
• Walk around the classroom and provide assistance as needed.

Independent Practice

• Have the students work on a project-based activity in which they create a classroom poster that illustrates the use of the six verbs in a sentence.
• They can use pictures and/or words to create the poster.
• Encourage them to be creative and to use correct spelling and tenses.

Closure

• Ask the students to share their posters with the class.
• Ask them to explain the uses of is am are was were in each sentence.

Assessment

• Observe the students during independent practice and give them feedback on their use of is am are was were in their sentences.
• Collect and review the posters to assess each student's understanding of the uses of is am are was were.
