Topic: Important Verbs to Start with

Objectives & Outcomes

• By the end of the lesson, students will be able to understand and use basic verbs in English.

Materials

• Computer with internet connection
• Whiteboard and markers
• List of verbs in English (either written on the whiteboard or distributed as a handout)

Warm-up

• Ask students to think of a hobby or activity that they enjoy doing.
• Have them share their hobbies with the class, and write them on the whiteboard.
• Ask students if they can describe their hobby using a verb (e.g. "running", "swimming", "reading").
• Explain that all actions and activities in English can be described using verbs.

Direct Instruction

• Write the word "verb" on the whiteboard and ask students if they know what it means.
• Explain that a verb is a word that describes an action or activity.
• Show the students the list of verbs and ask them to look at each one and decide if it describes an action or activity.
• If the students have difficulty, provide examples of how each verb can be used (e.g. "to run" can be used to describe the action of running, but "running" can also be used as a noun to describe a race).
• Explain that there are many different types of verbs, and that it is important to know which verb to use in different situations.

Guided Practice

• Divide the students into small groups and give each group a set of sentences with missing verbs.
• Ask the students to identify the missing verb in each sentence and then write the correct verb in the space provided.
• As the students work, walk around and provide support as needed.

Independent Practice

• Provide a list of verbs for the students to practice.
• Ask the students to choose three verbs from the list and write a sentence using each verb.
• Encourage the students to use the verbs correctly in their sentences.

Closure

• Review the importance of using action verbs in sentences.
• Ask the students to share one sentence they wrote using a verb from the list.

Assessment

• Observe the students during the independent practice to see if they are using verbs correctly in their sentences.
• Ask the students to share their completed worksheets with the teacher to assess their understanding of using verbs in sentences.
