Topic: Adjectives & Opposites

Objectives & Outcomes

• Students will be able to identify and use adjectives and opposites in their writing and speaking.

Materials

• Whiteboard or chalkboard
• Writing materials (pencils, paper, etc.)
• Examples of adjectives and opposites (e.g. big, small; happy, sad; hot, cold)

Warm-up

• Ask students to share some examples of adjectives they can think of. Write their responses on the board.
• Ask students to share some examples of opposites they can think of. Write their responses on the board.

Direct Instruction

• Explain to students that adjectives are words that describe nouns.
• Tell students that when they are trying to find the opposites of words, they need to look for words that have opposite meanings.
• Provide examples of opposites using the words from the warm-up activity. For example, "tall" is the opposite of "short," and "heavy" is the opposite of "light."
• Have students work with a partner to come up with more examples of opposites using the provided word bank.

Guided Practice

• Have students work with a partner to match the adjectives to the correct word on the list of opposites.
• Go over the answers as a class and have students explain their reasoning.

Independent Practice

• Have students choose two adjectives from the list and create a sentence using both words.
• Encourage students to use context and word order to make sure the sentence makes sense.

Closure

• Review the meanings of the adjectives and the concept of opposites.
• Ask students to share one of their sentences with the class.

Assessment

• Observe students during the independent practice activity and provide feedback on their use of adjectives and opposites in their sentences.
