2nd Grade About Idioms Lesson Plan

Topic: Idioms

Objectives & Outcomes

  • Students will be able to understand and use idioms in their spoken and written English.

Materials

  • Examples of idioms (e.g. "raining cats and dogs," "sick as a dog," "blind as a bat," etc.)
  • Chart paper and markers

Warm-up

  • Ask students if they know what idioms are.
  • Let students share some examples they know.
  • Explain that idioms are common expressions in English that don't always make sense when translated literally.

Direct Instruction

  • Review some common idioms, such as "raining cats and dogs," "sick as a dog," and "blind as a bat."
  • Have students write down the expressions on cards or paper.
  • Explain that idioms are used to help us convey ideas and emotions more creatively and effectively.
  • Ask students to think of some ways they might use idioms in their own language.

Guided Practice

  • Divide the class into small groups.
  • Give each group a set of idioms and have them work together to come up with creative ways to use each one in their own language.
  • Have each group share their ideas with the class.

Independent Practice

  • Give each student a piece of paper and a pen.
  • Have the students think of a common situation that happens in their lives (e.g. going to the dentist, meeting a new friend).
  • Have them write out the situation and then think of as many ways as they can to change the situation using an idiom (e.g. "going to the dentist" could be changed to "smiling from ear to ear").
  • Have the students write out their creative ways of changing the situation using an idiom.

Closure

  • Have the students share their creative ways of changing the situation using an idiom with the class.
  • Discuss the different ways that the students came up with and how they are using idioms to express themselves.
  • Ask the students to give examples of other idioms that they have heard or used before.

Assessment

  • Observe the students during the independent practice activity and look for them to use appropriate idioms while telling a story.
  • Review the students' pictures and give feedback on their use of idioms.
