Materials

  • Computer with MS WORD installed
  • Handouts with examples of basic MS WORD features and functions, formatting text, paragraphs and pages

Warm-up

  • Ask the students to bring their computers to class and log in to their MS WORD program.
  • Open a new document in MS WORD and have the students work in pairs to complete the task of adding and formatting a header, a paragraph and a page number to their document.

Direct Instruction

  • Explain to the students that MS WORD is a powerful word processing program that allows users to format text and create professional-looking documents.
  • Show the students how to use the different formatting tools in MS WORD, such as the font selection tool, the font size tool, the color selection tool, the paragraph alignment tool, and the paragraph spacing tool.
  • Explain the purpose and function of each formatting tool. For example, the font selection tool is used to choose the typeface and size of the text, and the font size tool is used to change the size of the text.
  • Demonstrate how to use the formatting tools to format a paragraph, a header, and a page number in the open document.

Guided Practice

  • Show the students a sample document with formatted text and ask them to identify the different formatting tools used to create the document.
  • Have the students work in pairs and give each pair a sample document with formatted text.Have the students use the formatting tools to replicate the formatting in the sample document.
  • Have the students share their work with the class and discuss any differences or questions they had while using the formatting tools.

  • Collect the students' practice documents and use the assessment to evaluate their understanding of MS Word formatting.
