Topic: Introduction to the internet and its uses

Objectives & Outcomes

• Children will be able to define internet and explain its functions or uses.
• Children will be able to navigate a web browser and use a search engine to find information.

Materials

• Computer with internet access
• Web browser (e.g. Google Chrome, Mozilla Firefox)
• Search engine (e.g. Google, Yahoo! Search)
• Handouts with information about the internet

Warm-Up

• Show the children a computer with a web browser open and ask them to describe what they see.
• Have the children give examples of websites they have visited before.
• Ask the children to share any information they know about search engines and how to use them to find information.

Direct Instruction

• Explain to the children that the internet is a global network of computers and other devices that can communicate with each other.
• Tell the children that the internet can be used for many different purposes, such as communication, entertainment, and finding information.
• Show the children how to use a search engine to find information and have them try it themselves.

Guided Practice

• Have the children work in pairs and give each pair a set of questions.
• Have the children use the search engine to find the answers to their questions.
• Have the children share their answers with the class.

Independent Practice

• Have the children choose a topic they are interested in (e.g. dinosaurs, their favorite sport, etc.)
• Have the children use the search engine to find information on their chosen topic.
• Have the children create a poster or presentation to share their findings with the class.

Closure

• Review with the children the main points of the lesson (i.e. what is the internet, how do we use it, etc.)
• Ask the children to share their posters or presentations with the class.

Assessment

• Observe the children as they work on their independent practice and provide feedback.
• Have the children answer questions about the internet and its uses in a group discussion or in a written form.
