Objectives & Outcomes:

• Students will be able to understand the concept of joining words and learn how to use them correctly in sentences.

Materials

• Flashcards with joining words (such as "and", "or", "but", "then", "because", "so")
• Pen and paper for each student

Warm-up

• Ask the students if they know what joining words are.
• Ask them to give some examples of joining words.
• Write the examples on the board.

Direct Instruction

• Introduce the concept of joining words and explain that they are words that are used to connect ideas or parts of a sentence.
• Explain that joining words help us to read and understand sentences more easily.
• Give an example of a sentence without joining words and with joining words. Ask the students to point out the joining words in the sentence.
• Read some more sentences with joining words and without joining words, and ask the students to point out the joining words.

Guided Practice

• Give each student a sentence strip with joining words and without joining words.
• Have the students read their sentences and identify the joining words.
• Then, have the students write a new sentence with joining words that they have identified.
• Allow time for students to discuss and share their work with a partner.

Independent Practice

• Have the students choose a book to read independently.
