Topic: Writing sentences

Objectives & Outcomes

• Students will be able to write a grammatically correct sentence using proper punctuation.

Materials

• Writing paper
• Pencils
• Sentence writing practice worksheets

Warm-up

• Review the parts of a sentence (subject, verb, object).
• Have students practice writing simple sentences, such as "I see a cat" or "The cat is black."
• Have students share their sentences with the class and check for grammar mistakes.

Direct Instruction

• Introduce the concept of subjects and verbs as the essential parts of a sentence.
• Use the handouts to demonstrate the different types of subjects (nouns, noun phrases, and verb phrases) and verbs (regular, irregular, and action verbs).
• Discuss the importance of punctuation in a sentence (e.g. commas in lists, semi-colons and conjunctions in complex sentences).
• Model how to check for grammatical errors in a sentence (e.g. making sure the subject and verb agree, and that there are no missing or unnecessary punctuation marks).

Guided Practice

• Have students work in pairs to identify and correct the grammatical errors in the sentences provided.
• Check for understanding by having students explain their corrections to their pairs.
• If time allows, have students write their own sentences using the provided subject and verb templates.

Independent Practice

• Have students choose a subject and verb template of their choice and write a sentence using the template.
• Students can use the provided pencils and paper to write their sentences.
