Objectives & Outcomes

  • Students will be able to identify and describe different types of mammals.

Materials

  • Pictures of different types of mammals (e.g. cat, dog, deer, bear, whale, etc.)
  • Chart paper and markers

Warm-up

  • Ask students if they have ever seen or heard of any animals that are called mammals.
  • Encourage students to share their experiences with the class.
  • Write the word "mammals" on the board and ask students to give examples of animals that they think are mammals.

Direct Instruction

  • Show students pictures or videos of different types of mammals and have them identify which ones are mammals and which are not.
  • Discuss the characteristics that all mammals have in common, such as fur, milk to feed their young, and a body temperature that is warmer than that of other animals.
  • Have students look at the pictures or watch the videos again and help them to identify the specific characteristics of each type of mammal.
