Objectives & Outcomes

• Students will be able to identify different types of plants and their basic characteristics.

Materials

• Pictures of different types of plants (such as flowers, trees, and vegetables)
• Chart paper and markers

Warm-up

• Ask students if they have ever seen or heard of any different types of plants. Write their answers on the chart paper.
• Ask students what they know about plants. Write their answers on the chart paper.

Direct Instruction

• Show students pictures or real examples of different types of plants.
• Ask students to describe what they see in each picture or example.
• Ask students to share any information they know about each type of plant.

Guided Practice

• Divide students into small groups and give each group one of the types of plants discussed.
• Have students take turns describing the plant and asking questions about it to their group members.
• Encourage students to use their knowledge to help guide their group members in identifying and describing the plant.

Independent Practice

• Have students work individually or in small groups to create a classroom garden containing a variety of the types of plants discussed.
• Encourage students to be creative and use their knowledge of plants to choose specific types for their garden.
• Allow enough time for students to care for their garden and monitor its growth.

Closure

• Have students share their gardens with the class and discuss the different plants they chose and why they chose them.
• Remind students of the importance of plants in our everyday lives and the different ways they can be used.

Assessment

• Observe students during the sorting and discussion activities to see if they are able to identify and explain the different uses of plants.
• Evaluate students' independent practice projects for their ability to compare and contrast different plants and their uses.
