Topic: Planets

Objectives & Outcomes

  • Students will be able to identify the planets in our solar system.

Materials

  • Pictures of the planets
  • Chart paper or whiteboard and markers

Warm-up

  • Ask students if they know what a planet is.
  • Ask them to name the planets they know.
  • Write the names of the planets on the chart paper or whiteboard.

Direct Instruction

  • Show the pictures of the planets to the students and ask them to identify each one.
  • Ask them to name the features of each planet (e.g. size, color, atmosphere).
  • Ask them to describe the differences and similarities between the planets.

Guided Practice

  • Using the handouts, have the students complete the comparison grid by comparing the characteristics of the planets.
  • Go over the answers as a class.

Independent Practice

  • Have the students create a poster that shows the planet sizes in order from smallest to largest. They can use the materials provided, as well as any additional materials they may have.

Closure

  • Review the main points of the lesson: the names and sizes of the planets.
  • Have the students share their posters with the class.

Assessment

  • Collect the posters and use them to assess the students' understanding of the names and sizes of the planets.
