Topic: part of plant-leaves

Objective & Outcomes

• Students will be able to identify and name various parts of a plant, including leaves.
• Students will be able to describe the functions of each part of the plant.

Materials

• Foot-long sections of various types of plants (e.g. grass, flowers, herbs, vegetables)
• Magnifying glasses (optional)

Warm-up

• Have students sit in a circle.
• Give each student a piece of the various types of plants.
• Have the students examine the plants and try to identify the various parts.
• Encourage the students to ask questions and use their senses to explore the plants (e.g. smell, touch, taste).
• After a few minutes, discuss the answers as a group.

Direct Instruction

• Show the students the various types of plants and their corresponding leaves.
• Explain that each type of plant has its own unique leaves that help the plant to survive and thrive in its environment.
• Ask the students to name some examples of different types of leaves they see.
• Have the students look at the various types of leaves up close and observe their characteristics and features.
• Discuss the purpose and function of each type of leaf (e.g. some leaves are used for photosynthesis, others for protection).
• Have the students complete the handouts with the names and descriptions of the various types of leaves.

Guided Practice

• Give each student a plant identifier chart and have the students match the various types of leaves to their corresponding plants.
• Have the students work with a partner to discuss and explain their matches.
• Have the students present their work to the class and discuss any differences or disagreements among the students.

Independent Practice

• Have the students choose a plant that is common in their area and find pictures of its leaves online or in a book.
• Have the students create a collage using the pictures of the plant's leaves and the plant identifier chart.
• Ask the students to write a short description of their collage and explain why they chose the leaves they did for their collage.

Closure

• Review the main points of the lesson, including the importance of leaves in the growth and survival of a plant, the different types of leaves, and the functions of each type of leaf.
• Ask the students to share something they learned about leaves during the lesson.

Assessment

• Observe the students during the independent practice activity to assess their understanding of the main points of the lesson.
• Review the students' drawings and written sentences during the independent practice activity to assess their understanding of the different types of leaves and the functions of each type-of leaf.
